2 arrested, UC Davis building vandalized by protesters during event featuring conservative activist

Two people were arrested during a student-led event at UC Davis that was organized by the group Turning Point USA and featured conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The two people who were arrested were protesting the event, according to the university. They are accused of painting graffiti on an exterior wall of the University Credit Union Center, where the event was being held. One of the people arrested is charged with misdemeanor vandalism and resisting arrest. The other person was charged with vandalism, resisting arrest and threats to a police officer.

UC Davis officials said an officer was hurt during the event when he was jumped on from behind and pushed to the ground. Protesters at the event also broke 10 glass panels in the doors but were not able to gain access to the building. Officials said no arrests were made related to the broken glass panels. About 500 attendees were in the audience when Charlie Kirk was speaking. Outside of the event, about 100 protesters gathered and briefly blocked the main entrance and pathway, UC Davis officials said.

Officials said the protesters, at one point, began throwing eggs and other objects, and there were some reports of people being pepper sprayed by others in the crowd. “Aside from these pepper spray reports, no major physical injuries were reported and no one requested treatment for injuries,” UC Davis officials said. Back in October 2022, UC Davis had decided to cancel a similar event , also organized by Turning Point USA, due to a 100-person brawl outside the venue.
