The 18-year-old winger, who has broken into the first team this season, limped off in United's 0-0 draw against Southampton after a firm but fair sliding tackle from Kyle Walker-Peters .
Garnacho, who had come on as a substitute in the 73rd minute, seemed in agony on the Old Trafford pitch after the challenge on 82 minutes but played on for a further eight before being taken off in the final minute. After the match, Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag insisted his starlet's injury was not 'too bad'. But Argentine TV channel TyC Sports are reporting that Garnacho's knock is actually worse than initially feared and it means he will miss the national team's double header this month. Man United starlet Alejandro Garnacho's ankle injury is worse than first feared, say reports Garnacho, 18, left Old Trafford on crutches after a 0-0 draw against Southampton on Sunday He was subbed off after his right ankle was caught by Kyle Walker-Peters’ sliding challenge Manager Erik ten Hag had said the injury was not 'too bad' immediately after the final whistle They state he has undergone medical testing on Tuesday which shows the injury is serious enough to rule him out of friendlies against Panama and Curacao on March 23 and 28 respectively. Talented teen Garnacho was pictured leaving Old Trafford on crutches and with his right leg in a protective boot.
Dutchman Ten Hag then said he believed the ankle injury was only a sprain and that he withdrew Garnacho as a precaution. He said: 'He was limping a little bit after a bad tackle so in the end I thought I would bring on another striker as we were already downsized to 10 men (after Casemiro's red card). I don't think it's (the injury) too bad.' Alejandro's brother Roberto posted a picture of his stricken sibling on social media with the caption: 'I know you will come back stronger'. World Cup winners Argentina, managed by Lionel Scaloni, are said to be patient with the injury and will see how it develops before deciding whether to cut Garnacho from the squad.
Saints defender Walker-Peters was shockingly targeted by vile racist abuse on social media after the game. The club accused Instagram of allowing 'hatred to breed and fester' as police investigate the messages sent to the full-back after the goalless stalemate.
