Portland Thorns forward Janine Beckie suffers torn ACL, out for 2023 season

The will be without one of their veteran contributors for the entire 2023 season. Forward Janine Beckie has a torn ACL in her right knee, the team announced on Friday. Beckie sustained the contact injury during the team’s preseason match against the U.S. Under-23 women’s national team on Wednesday at Providence Park.

Beckie, 28, has 101 caps for the Canada women’s national team. The injury will keep her sidelined for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer. Beckie and her Canada teammates, including Thorns teammate Christine Sinclair, have been at the forefront of a fight for pay equity with the Canadian Soccer Association. Beckie joined the Thorns in April 2022, signing a three-year contract. She made 19 appearances including nine starts in the 2022 regular season, notching two assists and making 18 key passes.

Beckie will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and will conduct her rehabilitation with the help of Thorns medical staff at Providence Park and the Providence Sports Care Center. -- Ryan Clarke, , Twitter:
